(about "Suicide Girl" single)
First off, although a band's name shouldn't influence whether you give them the
time of day or not, it does play a major factor in determining whether you should
be bothered to give them a play. Bi-Polar Baby fair pretty badly on this front
choosing to name themselves after a mental health disorder and adding to this
the single title, 'Suicide Girl', so we're set up for some teenage emo, right?
Thankfully, Bi-Polar Baby actually offer frothy, female-fronted pop punk with
a melodic edge, crisp guitars and snappy percussion. Singer Kaytee's vocals move
from sweet cries to ravaging growls in seconds, giving the Birmingham band plenty
of punch. Imagine The Long Blondes with a sharper edge and less obsession with
indie fashion and you're not far off.
The b-side, 'Bi-Polar Baby'
is a seductive melody that snakes its way into your brain with eerie vocals
before the shuddering chorus kicks in. They're worth more than the one listen,
and if only they dropped the attention seeking moniker, they might get the fans
they deserve!
